Just over a year ago I quit my job to travel the world and here’s one of the most common questions I get:

“When are you going back to work?”

My response?

I am working.
Hard.

On myself.
On things that matter to me.
On impacting people in more profound ways.
On living a life that feels true, aligned, and right,
for me.

This season didn’t come easy.

I’ve broken hearts.
Taken risks.
Left my old life behind.
And ventured into the unknown.

No direction.
No clarity.
Massive uncertainty.

And still -
I feel I’m on the right path.

Trusting the feeling.

Intuition over logic

Recently, that intuition led me to travel every country in Central America.

48 days.
6 countries.
An unthinkable amount of chicken buses.
And friends, experiences, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Mission complete.

Made it to Panamá City - final country of Central America! Arrived at 3:15am by bus, so I went and caught the sunrise at these rocks. Epic!

I’ve now traveled to 22 countries (on a mission to hit 34 by 34).

So here are 22 ways in which travel has changed my life - and why you might consider solo travel (even briefly).

  1. Travel forces growth. Discomfort is the norm.

    1. It builds confidence - earned through life experience.

  2. You become self sufficient - solely responsible for yourself.

    1. You prove to yourself you’re stronger than you think.

  3. You try things you never thought of, and do things you thought impossible.

    1. Backflips at 32. Overcoming fear of cliff jumps. Climbing active volcanoes I never knew existed.

  4. You gain perspective. Cross-cultureal intelligence. Appreciation for how others live. Gratitude for what we have.

    1. Like throwing toilet paper in the toilet.

    2. Or drinking faucet water.

    3. A roof that doesn’t leak.

    4. What a concept.

  5. You develop new perspectives on your life. New environments = new ways of thinking.

  6. I’ve never met anyone who regretted traveling.

  7. You experience true freedom - go wherever you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want.

  8. You share life-changing experiences with people you just met.

    1. Like climbing a 13,000+ foot active volcano with a friend I made on a ride from the airport. Two days later, we’re climbing erupting volcanoes.

    2. Or dancing until 3am at one of the biggest parties in Latin America with your new friends from a shuttle.

  9. You learn to trust your intuition. Even when logic justifies otherwise. And find more self-confidence.

  10. You become a kid again, remembering what it feels like to just play.

    1. Barefoot walks through mud.

    2. Throwing coconuts at a stick on a beach.

    3. Practicing handstands.

    4. Climbing rocks because it feels natural.

    5. Dance without ego.

    6. Exploring curiosities you never knew you had.

  11. You become resourceful.

    1. Buses. Borders. Logistics. Plans. You figure it out.

  12. You realize how little you actually need.

    1. A backpack. Some clothes. Journal and pen. Not much needed over here.

  13. I’ve rediscovered my love for being with myself. At times it’s lonely, but I’ve loved my own company again.

  14. And at the same time - some of my favorite memories are shared.

  15. You meet interesting people from all over the world. With some of the most interesting stories, backgrounds, and lives you’ll ever hear.

    1. One of my best travel friends, Lucas, doesn’t have a phone.

    2. I immediately took off my watch and lost track of time for the next four months.

  16. You learn how little you need to be happy. Finding joy in the simple things:

    1. Human connection

    2. Sunsets

    3. Dancing

    4. Nature

    5. All things that cost nothing. But prove to be everything.

  17. You laugh. Unapologetically.

    1. At life. At yourself. At how wild it all is.

  18. You create culturally-rich experiences.

    1. Like sharing coconuts with locals, learning about their life, struggles, adversity - yet unwavering optimism for a beautiful life

    2. Or staying with host families in Copán and learn about perseverance and faith from single mothers who lose their husband and are left with 4 kids and $20.

    3. Or my Guatemalan host dad that lost his wife and two kids, but continues to preach “Bonita la vida” (life is beautiful)

  19. You experience indescribable freedom - a feeling that must be felt to be understood.

  20. You collect memories instead of things.

  21. Answers you seek find you - in mysteriously beautiful ways.

    1. Walking through rice fields in Bali

    2. Yoga on the beach of Thailand

    3. Hitchhiking through El Salvador

    4. Admiring sunsets on Cathedral rooftops in Nicaragua

    5. There’s magic in unfamiliar environments

  22. You feel alive. Like, fully alive.

Present.
Engaged.
Connected.

You might even take Spanish school.
Or find yourself at a soccer game with the locals.
Or doing 10pm rooftop workouts with your host family in Honduras.
Or taking salsa classes simply because you want to.

Doing things you never planned.

But maybe that’s the point.

To live an unconventional life.
Follow curiosity.
Trust your instincts.

And best of all, you get to live the words of Mary Oliver:

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

🧘‍♂️ Mindfulness Tip of the Week

Tip: Humans over AI

Action: Next time you reach for your phone to ask AI / ChatGPT a question, ask yourself if a human can potentially answer.

Value: So often we utilize technology for an answer - that we are slowly eradicating the human connection element of life. Hold onto it. Ask people. Life is better engaged.

*Caveat - I use ChatGPT all the time. And continue to try and engage with humans whenever possible. Always.

🧠 Podcast of the Week

No recommendation this week - but a double down on the above. See if, rather than plugging in and disconnecting, you can reconnect with some humans. Ask questions. Get uncomfortable. Derive conversations.
