🌱 Welcome Back
Another week. Another house gig.
And while I love spontaneity and the sabbatical adventure, sometimes I feel lost.
Like I’m missing purpose and direction.
Often thinking, “What the f*** am I doing with my life?”
Then I’ll go for a run, do some yoga, teach some yoga, or help someone - and life seems to make sense again.
But today is an acknowledgment that I don’t have it figured out.
Not even close.
😮💨 I Can Breathe
I just sold my rental property in Oregon and let me tell you - that was a breath of fresh air.
Inhaling freedom.
Exhaling pressure.
Phewwwwwww.
I’m grateful for younger Colin’s hard work and intentionality over the last decade: being career-focused and making strategic investments.
To create freedom.
To have freedom.
And now that it’s here… what’s next?
I’ve been smart with my finances during sabbatical - staying in hostels for $10/night, avoiding unnecessary expenditures, house sitting to save on rent - but I recently felt the weight of my savings declining.
I even started brainstorming money-making ideas (dare I say, job opportunities).
So when I say this house sale came at the perfect time, let me tell you… it did.
Almost like it was divine timing…
Like I was supposed to start problem-solving and thinking through my future.
What I would do.
How to make money.
And my latest - who do I want to be, and what do I want my life to look like, at age 35?
(Just over a year away and quite the sobering thought).
🧊 Paralysis
I also have a 5-week ‘freedom window’ coming up.
Roughly 40 days without teaching or house sitting.
Do I take a journey?
Create something?
I thought about knocking off more National Parks.
Taking a campervan around Iceland.
Or road-tripping through the Balkans to hit my goal of 34 countries by my 34th birthday.
But I’ve found myself paralyzed by optionality.
What about doing what I want to do versus what I feel like I should do?
Even with all this time, freedom, and curiosity,
why is it so hard to decide?
Why can options feel overwhelming?
💥 Action into the Unknown
I haven’t figured out the answers.
But I’ve been thinking about them.
And I say all this to share that if you’ve felt confused, lost, uncertain about where you’re headed, or are currently feeling this way…
You’re not alone.
I’m writing this while house sitting.
Alone.
Haven’t interacted with a real human in two days.
But I recognize it’s also part of the chapter.
We need to do things, try things, and experience things in order to find what we don’t want in life, in order to find what we do.
And when it’s all said and done - I zoom out and look at my life from a 30,000-foot view.
And remember what a blessing this chapter, this life, truly is.
A blessing of a challenge to figure out.
A gift.
I have no idea what the next 40 days will bring.
Let alone the next year.
But what a gift that I get to figure out.
And as my mentor just told me on the phone two hours ago:
Action cures anxiety.
So onward we go.
Action into the unknown.
🧘♂️ Mindfulness Tip of the Week
Tip: Happy Labor Day - acknowledge the work!
Action: Take a second to simply acknowledge the work you’ve done to get to this point in your life.
Whether it be your career, partnership, parenthood, volunteer work, self-improvement, being a friend/spouse/sibling/parent - whatever it may be.
You’ve done some incredible things in this world.
And I hope you realize that.
Why it matters:
I feel that so often we can overlook the work we’ve done - often looking towards the next milestone, checkpoint, goal.
But taking a step back to actually acknowledge what we’ve done, who we’ve become, and who we have helped is a powerful process in life.
Because without intentional recognition, how else would we even reflect upon it? Learn from it? And continue sharing our gifts with the world?
