7pm Sunday night. Back in Bali after 40+ hours of travel. Three days into Meditation Teacher Training.

And I’m finally sitting down to write this newsletter.

Exhausted from 11-12 hour training days with light discussions like:

“If all your thoughts and emotions walked out the door, what remains?”

But here we are - following through on my 2026 commitment to write one newsletter per week.

“Doing what we said we would do, long after the feeling that we set it in has left.” - Inky Johnson

Now let’s get into it ⬇️

Today’s Agenda:

  1. Why Meditation Teacher Training?

  2. The Beginner’s Mindset

  3. The one phrase I’m leaning into for this training

And how these can be applied to your life.

🧘‍♂️ Why Meditation Teacher Training?

This is my second teacher training in the last year.

The first one being my 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training last September which unexpectedly led me to teach yoga for five months.

Now here we are going deeper in a practice that has changed my life in a short amount of time:

Meditation.

Yoga & Meditation go hand-in-hand,
so I see this as an opportunity to:

  • Deepen my practice

  • Deepen my teaching

And above all - go deeper on myself.

Explore the depths of my soul.
My being.
Intuition.

And at the same time work through some prominent questions at a pivotal stage of my life.

What’s next?
Who am I?
Where do I want to take this next chapter of my life?
How do I want to evolve?

So I’ll be intentionally using this time to journal, reflect, and meditate on what’s next in my life.

All while developing the skills to share this practice with the world.

🧠 The Beginner’s Mindset

Last year’s Yoga Teacher Training also reminded me of the value in being a complete beginner.

To be curious.
Engaged.
Ask questions.
Proactively participate.

Learning to learn again.
Learning how I learn again.

What a beautiful thing to discover new passions in life, and intentionally decide, and invest, to go deeper.

To embrace not knowing.
Starting from zero.
Trying new things.

The Beginner’s Creed

I am a beginner.
I am entering a new game about which I know nothing.
I do not yet know how to move in this game.
I see many other people playing in this game now.
This game has gone on for many years prior to my arrival.
I am a new recruit arriving here for the first time.
I see value to me in learning to navigate this domain.

There is much for me to learn.
The basic terminology.
The basic rules.
The basic moves of action.
The basic strategies.

While I am learning these things, I may feel various negative reactions.
Overwhelmed at how much there is to learn.
Insecure that I do not know what to do.
Inadequate that I lack the capacity to do this.
Frustrated and discouraged that my progress is so slow.
Angry that I have been given insufficient guidance.
Anxious that I will never perform up to expectations on which my career depends.
Embarrased that everyone can see my mistakes.

But these moods are part of being a beginner.
It does not serve my goal and ambition to dwell in them.

Instead,
If I make a mistake I will ask - what lesson does this teach?
If I make discovery, I will celebrate my aha! moment.
If I feel alone, I will remember that I have many friends ready to help.
If I am stuck, I will ask for help from my teachers.

Over time, I will make fewer mistakes.
I will gain confidence in my abilities.
I will need less guidance from my teachers and friends. I will gain familiarity with the game.
I will be able to have intelligent conversations with others in the game.
I will not cause breakdowns for promises that I lack-
the competence to keep.

I have an ambition to become competent,
perhaps even proficient or expert in this game.

But for now,
I am a beginner.

I hope this helps you embrace your next challenge with tenacity, enthusiasm, and curiosity.

🌱 Closing

In the Opening Circle of our meditation training, we were instructed to identify words / phrases to welcome into the group.

People nomiated all sorts of ideas:

Gratitude
Patience
Laughter
Love

Intuitively, only one thing came to my mind:

Just go for it.

And I’ll leave you with that.

Whatever your next challenge.
The thing you’ve always wanted to learn, try, or do.
The next time you experience doubt, fear, or uncertainty.

I have four five words for you:

Just f****** go for it.

You have nothing to lose.
And everything to gain.

Go for it 🚀

🧘‍♂️ Mindfulness Tip of the Week

Tip: Box Breathing (4-4-4-4) Meditation

Action:

  • Inhale 4 seconds

  • Hold 4 seconds

  • Exhale 4 seconds

  • Hold 4 seconds

  • Repeat 4-6 times

  • Time: 3-5 minutes

Value: Helps calm the nervous system, focus the mind, and bring you back to the present moment.

Slow, intentional breaths will send a signal to your brain that you are safe, grounded, and in control.

P.S. - part of my 40+ hour travel to Bali included a nine hour layover in Abu Dhabi,
so you know I made the most of it.

And I encourage you to do the same when life presents opportunities.

It was never “Damn, I have a nine hour layover”

But rather, “Hell yeah - another place to explore, another culture to learn from”

Check it out ⬇️
